Keloids are benign firm, smooth, hard growths that can form at any injury site. It is caused by unregulated scar tissue deposition. These keloids grow outside of the area of the injury site and can be itchy, large, obstructive and unsightly. Hypertrophic scars are raised scars that occur only within the borders of the injury. So they will never grow very large, but they will be raised, and they can be unsightly, particularly when they are on the face. Anyone can get a keloid or hypertrophic scar and they can occur anywhere on the body. However, typically those with darker skin will tend to get them more.
